US Open : Quarter finals results

The 2017 instalment of the U.S. Open Presented by Macquarie Investment Management began on Saturday October 7 at Drexel University’s Daskalakis Athletics Center in Philadelphia as the world’s leading players battle in the first World Series event of the new season. The quarter-finals were played as a few surprises occured.

Three egyptians in the semis

Egypt’s Omar Mosaad reached the U.S. Open semi-finals with a win over Peru’s Diego Elias at Philadelphia’s Drexel University.

World No.5 Ali Farag and compatriot Fares Dessouky had a tremendous fight that went all the way to a deciding tie break in the fifth game and saw Farag win and go straight to the semis.

Defending U.S. Open champion Mohamed ElShorbagy was forced to work for every point as he saw off a resilient Simon Rösner in the quarter-finals. 

Nick Matthew was playing his 12th quarter-final appearance at the tournament as he won over his compatriot Daryl Selby in straight games.

another upset in the women draw

There was a huge upset in the first U.S. Open quarter-final as Nour El Tayeb knocked out top seed and current World Champion Nour El Sherbini.

New Zealand’s Joelle King defeated England’s Alison Waters and therefore qualified for her first semi-final appearance at the U.S. Open since 2013.

England’s Laura Massaro overcame Hong Kong’s Annie Au and joins her fifth U.S. Open semi-final.

Raneem El Welily managed to beat compatriot Nouran Gohar  to complete the women’s semi-final line-up at this year’s U.S. Open.
